Pass the Crunchies

Yup, it’s Friday, which means that Transmission is tomorrow. Never one to plan too far in advance, I’m having a ponder over what I might play tomorrow night. It’s the second half of our second birthday party (after Belgian maniacs The Subs ripped the place apart last week), and the residents are all getting together to begin writing the next chapter of this illustrious event.

The first in our Trasnmission Radio series where Haido, Dave Parle & Quigo get together on a bi-weely basis to discuss what’s turning our taps on and off the dancefloor that week. Ice cream, football and tunes. What more could you ask for?

Optimum Space

Following on from our post on The Haçienda recordings, arguably the best club night of our generation; Optimo finally called it a day last Sunday. After 12 years of incredible Sunday night service at various venues around the city, for its last few years settling at Glasgow’s Sub Club.

Reports from the last night so far range from ‘epic’ to ‘life changing’. It was a spectacular event judging by the enthusiastic fans that queued up for several hours to get in, and even after that only a lucky handful getting in to the 400 capacity venue. Their no guestlist policy they run is pretty admirable too.

Optimo, or ‘Optimo Espacio’ started life 1998 when Keith McIvor just wanted do a night that was a little different. Drafting in Belfast playboy Jonnie Wilkes, Optimo came to life. Initially losing a lot of money hand over fist but eventually clicking with the Sunday night faithful. When those who couldn’t visit the night got their hands on the Kill the DJ and subsequently the Psyche Out and Walkabout compilations the Optimo sound spread worldwide and drew more people to the night from all corners of the world.

But as they say: A little less conversation, a lot more action. Here’s a recording of their entire last set in full….

It’s what your grandfather used to call… house music

If I’m not mistaken, this will be one of tracks of the summer.

What is that weird sound, that makes me feel all warm in my belly? That mysterious music that makes my hips shake and confuses my sense of gravity, making me want to move my feet to the beat of the drum, as if possessed by some sort of half religious half paternal figure who scares me a lot and makes me feel at home at the same time…

It’s what your grandfather used to call… house music

What is that peculiar noise amplifying every one of my heartbeats? That repetitive melody, hypnotising me, soon followed by a small yet game-changing variation that makes me feel alive for the first time of my life. What is that pure wave of joy grabbing a hold of my soul, taking my mind hostage, setting my love free?

It’s what your grandfather used to call… house music

What is that strange rhythm taking me to places i’ve never been? Turning the hair on my arms into a crop of beatiful sunflowers, making my spine feel like a slinky, confusing me but at the same time providing me with answers to fundamental questions such as: Who am I? What am i doing here? Are we alone in the universe? Is that girl sitting over there at the bar looking at me? am i really going to walk up to her and buy her a drink?

It’s what your grandfather used to call… house music

Drunk Girls

Like most people we’re really not too fond of the first single from LCD Soundsystem’s surprisingly not bad but after after a few listens really not all that great new album; This is Happening (An ironic title if you’d bought a ticket for tonight’s Dublin show). The track does however seem to make a lot more sense when accompanied by this video

New Iphone

More nerd news from Transmission. What was first thought to be hoax is now pretty much being accepted as the real deal. The prototype phone – dubbed the “iPhone 4G” – was found left in a bar in Redwood City, California, about 19 miles from Apple’s headquarters. Unlike Dave Parle (in joke!) the phone has not been returned.

Someone no doubt has been fired for this. Will this ruin the Christmas morning effect that Apple fans get from Steve Jobs product launches. We’d be surprised if this is anything like the final design though.

We’ll have the latest nerd chat right here, unless something more interesting happens.
